I thougth the most memorable and meaningful thing about today was going to be filing campaign papers. But then the verdict came in.
My heart was pounding out of my chest waiting for the words. I could feel tears welling up and stinging in my eyes before there were any words I just didn't know what kind of tears would end up flowing. Relief or sadness. Then the words came. The tears came. I could feel the arc bending toward justice. Such a welcome surprise and relief. Still, it was painful to watch the fear in Mr. Chauvin's eyes and see how emaciated he had grown, likely from the stress. I could take no joy in his pain. But I knew the pain he caused so many others was mortal and deep. I felt joy for their relief. For me, the tears naturally came with music. At times like these I am immediately drawn back to the Justice Choir project. I have enjoyed singing from their free song book with my UUCGL choir mates thanks to Lyle Brown's wonderful talent for curating music. One of my favorites songs from that collection is Bend the Arc, but I have never managed to find a video recording of it. So here is what I am singing to today in honor of George Floyd and all who have worked for this day. Are you singing? I am also Saying Their Names, including these nearly 250 women that have been fatally shot by police since 2015 and these 108 Black Men And Boys. These bios, photos, and artisti renderings are so compelling. Peace. Unity. Love. |
